So, what’s Relax Kids all about?
Relax Kids is a fabulous 7 step approach taking children from high energy to relaxation. The steps we go through are MOVE, PLAY, STRETCH, FREEL, BREATHE, BELIEVE, RELAX.
A typical session starts with movement so just a gentle warm up to start us off. Nothing too strenuous though!! Then we move on to play and I introduce some lively (sometimes noisy) play to energise the children. We also take part in some mindful play to encourage a little mindfulness. Mindfulness is a fabulous tool to help us in those challenging moments. Then on to gentle stretching – which is a great way to encourage flexibility. I’m a qualified adult and kids yoga teacher too so it’s great to be able to call up on that experience to ensure we are stretching safely.
After the stretch we move on to feel and in this step we do self massage which the children love. It could be a face massage or we might massage the weather on our arms and legs! Then in breathe we learn different ways of breathing so that when we are having those challenging moments we know to come back to our breathe to help us. After practising the breathing we move on to believe where we use positive affirmations to talk about ourselves. We often find this quite hard in the beginning, but over time we start to become comfortable using positive words to describe ourselves and this alone can help us feel a lot more confident.
We then finish the session with relax when we lie down and enjoy some relaxation stories!
Great, that’s all very well but how will this benefit my child?
Children learn skills that they can use in their daily lives. Self confidence can be developed with regular practice of the affirmations, moods and and emotions can be managed through the mindful activities, the breathing and the positive affirmations. Using the breathing, the massage, the positive affirmations and the relaxation can help with our stress and anxiety and also help with sleep. The movement and stretching keep our bodies moving and energised.
